Our first full day in Almaty
Today is also day 55 since we left home.
The weather here is BEAUTIFUL! Spring is here. It is so nice to see green grass and spring flowers popping up. Some of the flowers are even starting to bloom. It is such a huge pleasant change from Aktobe. We are going to try and get out and enjoy it as much as we can. It is still snowing a bit in NH so we will be back to winter again, very soon.
Our little Linc gave us both high blood pressure today. He fell over flat backwards this morning. He whacked the back of his head on the floor (on the carpet part, thankfully). During this he bite down on his bottom lip splitting it open. He didn’t actually bleed too much but he screamed bloody murder. The worst part about it was Eric and I both were within three feet of him. It just happened too fast and he wasn’t doing anything dangerous. He got over it within five minutes. Eric and I aren’t over it yet and it happened over 12 hours ago. Tomorrow we are supposed to be taking him to the Embassy to get his visa picture taken. I hope they don’t mind he has a fat bloody lip. That should be fun to explain if they question us on why he is slightly broken.
I know all you parents out there who are old pros at this are saying this will happen a lot or something along those lines but it was our first major fall and if you could have heard his scream. It broke our hearts. I am sure most of you noticed his scratched up nose in some of the past posts. That occurred when he decided to crawl off the edge of the bed. The combination of his nose and the carpet stopped that fall. Thankfully the beds here are not more than 6 or 8 inches off the ground. He is so active, crawling around and now walking as much as he can from object to object. He does fall down a lot but usually just to his butt and we figure his diaper is protecting that a bit.
One good thing today, we finally were able to give Lincoln his antibiotic that our international doctor asked us to give him four days ago. We could not get the medicine in Aktobe. We found it here yesterday and he got his first dose today. He only needs to take it for four more days and hopefully it will cure his cough and congestion. He has had this cough for an undetermined length of time. He had it when we meet him on February 6th. We know he had bronchitis last November so we are not sure but think he might never have gotten over it completely. It is very common for orphanage babies to be sick like this and usually one round of antibiotics cures them. Hopefully this will be true for us.
We went out sight seeing today with Lena. She showed us a couple parks where we could take Lincoln to play on nice days. She also showed us important stuff like where to go to eat and where to go to buy baby supplies. She showed us where to walk to for fun and the few parts we should avoid. The part of the city we are staying is pretty nice and safe but you can never be too careful. She also gave us tips on how to get a taxi but I doubt we will do that without her assistance. We can walk it is good for us. Lena works for our adoption agency and lives here in Almaty. She is really nice and pleasant to be with. We really enjoyed her company today and we will probably do something with her tomorrow. Unfortunately for us she is leaving on Saturday to go to the states for work. Due to the huge time difference between here and home it was really nice to have someone in country to call when we had questions. This is the one big thing we do really like about our agency.
Over all we had a fantastic first day here. We are praying the weather stays nice for the rest of our visit. Unfortunately we did not hear any news today about Lincoln’s passport. Hopefully tomorrow we will get word that it has been received here. Once it is received we can apply for his visa and get his exit medical exam completed. Then we can come HOME!
